This seems to be an Apple bug triggered by some update in the past couple of months, at least on my MBP. You can't get back the highest resolution and have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (the higher resolution setting is not available on the integrated card, and for some reason the system won't permit the change). Open the Applications folder and start by double-clicking on the Thunderbird icon. Now eject the disk image by selecting it in a Finder window and pressing the command + E keys or by using the Finders File menu, and selecting Eject.
